The Effect of Cooling on the Density Profile of Hot Gas in Clusters of Galaxies : Is Additional Physics Needed ?

چکیده

We use high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the density profile of hot gas in clusters of galaxies, adopting a variant of cold dark matter cosmologies and employing a cosmological N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics code to follow the evolution of dark matter and gas. In addition to gravitational interactions, gas pressure, and shock heating, we include bremsstrahlung cooling in the computation. Dynamical time, two-body relaxation time, and cooling time in the simulations are examined to demonstrate that the results are free from artificial relaxation effects and that the time step is short enough to accurately follow the evolution of the system. In the simulation with nominal resolution of 66h kpc the computed cluster appears normal, but in a higher (by a factor 2) resolution run, cooling is so efficient that the final gas density profile shows a steep rise toward the cluster center that is not observed in real clusters. Also, the X-ray luminosity of 7 × 10ergs s far exceeds that for any cluster of the computed temperature. The most reasonable explanation for this discrepancy is that there are some physical processes still missing in the simulations that actually mitigate the cooling effect and play a crucial role in the thermal and dynamical evolution of the gas near the center. Among the promising candidate processes are heat conduction and heat input from supernovae. We discuss the extent to which these processes can alter the evolution of gas. Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Models of Galaxy Clusters with Thermal Conduction

We present a simple model of hot gas in galaxy clusters, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium and energy balance between radiative cooling and thermal conduction. For five clusters, A1795, A1835, A2199, A2390 and RXJ1347.5-1145, the model gives a good description of the observed radial profiles of electron density and temperature, provided we take the thermal conductivity κ to be about 30% of the S...

The Effect of Radiative Cooling on the Scale-Dependence of Global Stellar and Gas Contents of Groups and Clusters of Galaxies

It is widely believed that the global baryon content and mass-to-light ratio of groups and clusters of galaxies are a fair representative of the matter mix of the universe and therefore, can be used to reliably determine the cosmic mass density parameter ΩM. However, this fundamental assumption is challenged by growing evidence from optical and X-ray observations that the average gas mass fract...

Increasing Cooling Towers Heat Capacity by Flue Gas Introduction

In this paper the changes in the heat capacity of cooling towers has been investigated as a result of injecting combustion products of boilers. In the tower, the air is re-heated through mixing with hot flue gas after passing through the heat exchangers. As a result of this process, the draft of the cooling tower is increased. The additional produced draft depends on the ambient temperature and...
